Why Does Actual Pipe Diameter Differ from Nominal Size?

The mismatch is a legacy of how pipe sizing developed. Early pipe sizes were associated more closely with approximate internal flow capacity. As manufacturing improved, producers could use different wall thicknesses while maintaining the same external dimensions needed for established fittings and connections.
