The main disadvantages include installation expense, regular inspection and maintenance, and the risk of corrosion, leakage, freezing, or accidental water damage. However, proper system design, suitable pipe materials, and routine maintenance can reduce these risks and control the long-term fire sprinkler system cost.

The main fire sprinkler system components include the water supply, fire pump when required, control valves, alarm valves, risers, pipes, fittings, sprinkler heads, water-flow alarms, drains, and test connections. The correct pipe for a fire sprinkler system must match the required pressure rating, system type, project standard, and installation environment.

NFPA 13 is the primary standard for the design and installation of a commercial fire sprinkler system. NFPA 25 covers ongoing inspection, testing, and maintenance. Other standards, such as NFPA 20 for fire pumps, may also apply. The locally adopted building and fire codes and the authority having jurisdiction determine the exact requirements and edition.
