A galvanized steel pipe is a steel pipe that has been coated with a protective layer of zinc. This process, known as galvanization, is done to prevent the pipe from rusting and corroding. The zinc coating acts as a sacrificial layer, meaning it will corrode before the steel beneath it, extending the pipe’s lifespan.

Cutting or welding hot-dip galvanized pipe after coating also exposes bare steel that must be repaired.
ASTM A53/A53M is the most common standard for welded and seamless galvanized pipe used in mechanical and pressure applications. ASTM A795 applies to galvanized steel pipe for fire protection, while other structural products may follow different ASTM standards.
ASTM A53 covers galvanized steel pipe sizes from NPS 1/8 to NPS 26. Commonly ordered sizes include NPS 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1 1/2, 2, 4, 6, and 8, with wall thicknesses such as Schedule 10, 40, and 80. Actual availability depends on the standard, manufacturer, and application.
