Product Description
What is API 5CT Seamless Casing Pipe?
Purpose: Casing pipes are the large-diameter pipes that are inserted into the wellbore (the drilled hole) and then cemented in place. Their primary functions are:
- Structural Support: To prevent the wellbore from collapsing due to the pressure of surrounding rock formations.
- Isolation: To isolate different geological formations, preventing the mixing of fluids (like water, oil, or gas) between layers, and protecting freshwater aquifers from contamination.
- Well Control: To provide a robust barrier for controlling well pressures during drilling, completion, and production operations.
- Conduit for Other Equipment: They provide a pathway for running tubing, production equipment, and other downhole tools.
Key Features & Grades of API 5CT Seamless Casing Pipe
Diameter: Generally larger in diameter, ranging from about 4 1/2 inches up to 20 inches or more.
Wall Thickness: Thicker walls to withstand significant external and internal pressures.
Grades: API 5CT defines various steel grades for casing, each with specific chemical compositions and mechanical properties (yield strength, tensile strength). Common casing grades include:
-
- H40, J55, K55, N80 (Type 1 and Q), L80 (including 9Cr and 13Cr for corrosion resistance), C90, T95, P110, Q125. The higher the grade number, the higher the strength.
Connections: Different types of threaded connections are specified, such as:
-
- Short Round Thread Casing (STC)
- Long Round Thread Casing (LC)
- Buttress Thread Casing (BC)
- Extreme-Line Casing (XC)
Heat Treatment: Many grades require specific heat treatments (e.g., normalizing, quenching, and tempering) to achieve their desired mechanical properties and resistance to specific corrosive environments (like Sulfide Stress Cracking – SSC).
The ends of API 5CT seamless pipes (casing and tubing) are meticulously designed and manufactured, primarily with various types of threads, to ensure secure and functional connections essential for the integrity and performance of oil and gas wells. The choice of end connection depends heavily on the specific well conditions, including depth, pressure, temperature, and the corrosive nature of the fluids.
