Product Description

What is EN 10210 Square and Rectangular Steel Pipe Hollow Section?

EN 10210 is a European standard that specifies the technical delivery requirements for hot-finished structural hollow sections made from non-alloy and fine-grain steels. This includes square and rectangular steel pipe/hollow section tube (often referred to as SHS for Square Hollow Section and RHS for Rectangular Hollow Section).

Square and Rectangular Steel Pipe Hollow Section Tube (HSS):

As with ASTM A500, this refers to the shape of the structural steel product.

  • Square Hollow Section (SHS): Equal side dimensions.
  • Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS): Unequal side dimensions.
  • Hollow Section (HSS): Indicates the material has a hollow cross-section, providing an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and good torsional resistance.

Application of EN 10210 Square and Rectangular Steel Pipe Hollow Section

EN 10210 square and rectangular HSS are widely used in demanding structural and mechanical applications across Europe and other regions that adopt EN standards. Their excellent properties make them suitable for:

  • Heavy Construction: Main structural elements for high-rise buildings, bridges, large span roofs (e.g., stadiums).
  • Offshore Structures: Oil and gas platforms, due to their strength and impact toughness in harsh environments.
  • Mechanical Engineering: Cranes, heavy machinery frames, and transport equipment.
  • Infrastructure: Support columns, trusses, and various load-bearing structures.
  • Architectural Projects: Often used where exposed structural elements require both high performance and a clean, aesthetically pleasing finish.

Compare ASTM A500 with EN 10210 Hollow Sections

While both ASTM A500 and EN 10210 cover structural hollow sections, the key difference lies in the manufacturing process:

  • ASTM A500: Primarily covers cold-formed HSS.
  • EN 10210: Covers hot-finished HSS.

This difference in manufacturing leads to variations in residual stress, impact toughness, and sometimes dimensional tolerances and maximum achievable sizes/thicknesses. Designers often choose between them based on specific project requirements, design codes, and regional availability.
