Product Description
What is Pre-galvanized Steel Pipe?
Pre-galvanized steel pipe, also known as mill galvanized pipe, continuous hot-dip galvanized pipe, or in-line galvanized pipe, refers to steel pipe that is galvanized before it is formed into its final pipe shape. Pre-galvanized steel pipe is a cost-effective option for applications that require some corrosion protection and where the superior, all-encompassing protection of hot-dipped galvanizing is not strictly necessary.
Key Characteristics and Differences from Hot-Dipped Galvanized Pipe:
- Application Timing: The most significant difference is when the galvanization occurs.
Pre-galvanized: Steel is galvanized before forming and welding into a pipe
Hot-dipped galvanized: The finished pipe is immersed in molten zinc after fabrication.
- Coating Thickness: Pre-galvanized pipes generally have a thinner zinc coating (typically around 20-30 µm for tubes) compared to hot-dipped galvanized pipes (which can have 45-85 µm or more).
- Coverage:
Pre-galvanized: While the main body of the pipe is coated, the weld seam and any cut ends are often left exposed or have a thinner coating, making them more vulnerable to corrosion.
Hot-dipped galvanized: The entire finished product, including internal surfaces, weld seams, and cut edges, is fully immersed and coated, providing more comprehensive protection.4.
- Appearance: Pre-galvanized steel often has a brighter, smoother, and more uniform finish due to the continuous process and thinner coating. Hot-dipped galvanized can sometimes have a slightly rougher or uneven appearance due to the molten zinc pooling or dripping.
- Corrosion Resistance: Hot-dipped galvanized pipe generally offers superior and longer-lasting corrosion protection, especially in harsh or outdoor environments, due to its thicker and more complete coating, including the sacrificial protection over the entire surface. Pre-galvanized pipe provides good protection, but its vulnerability at the seams and thinner coating make it less robust in demanding conditions.
- Cost: Pre-galvanized pipe is often more cost-effective due to the streamlined, continuous manufacturing process.
- Abrasion Resistance: Hot-dipped galvanized steel, with its thicker zinc-iron alloy layers, tends to have better abrasion resistance.
Common Uses of Pre-Galvanized Steel Pipe:
Pre-galvanized pipes are used in applications where a moderate level of corrosion resistance is sufficient and cost is a significant factor. They are often found in:
- Indoor structural applications: Where exposure to harsh elements is limited.
- Light construction: Fencing, guardrails, and internal framing.
- Conduit: For electrical wiring.
- Some furniture and shelving.
- Automotive and transportation industries (for certain components).
