Scaffolding

The main parts of a scaffold are standards or uprights, ledgers, transoms or bearers, diagonal braces, working platforms, and base plates or adjustable base jacks. A complete scaffolding system also requires guardrails, midrails, toe boards, access ladders, and ties or anchors. The exact components vary between tube-and-coupler, frame, Ringlock, and Cuplock scaffolding, but every system must provide stable support, safe access, and adequate fall protection.

Common scaffolding accessories include right-angle couplers, swivel couplers, sleeve couplers, joint pins, base plates, adjustable base jacks, U-head jacks, steel planks, toe boards, guardrails, ladders, stairways, brackets, wall ties, anchors, and caster wheels. Ringlock and Cuplock systems may also use rosettes, ledger heads, wedges, and locking pins. All accessories must be compatible with the scaffold system and meet the project’s load and safety requirements.

A common scaffold pipe has an outside diameter of 48.3 mm, approximately 1.90 inches, although it is often called a 1½-inch scaffold tube. Typical wall thicknesses are 3.2 mm and 4.0 mm, while common lengths range from 0.5 to 6.0 meters. Dimensions may vary for frame, Ringlock, Cuplock, or shoring systems. Buyers should specify the actual outside diameter, wall thickness, length, steel grade, and applicable standard rather than relying only on the nominal pipe size.

A scaffolding pipe is a steel tube used to form the temporary load-bearing framework of a scaffold. It can serve as an upright, ledger, transom, brace, or tie depending on the system design. 39 is a widely used European standard for loose steel tubes used in tube-and-coupler scaffolding. A common EN 39 scaffold tube has a 48.3 mm outside diameter and a nominal wall thickness of 3.2 mm or 4.0 mm. BS 1139 covers metal scaffolding tubes, couplers, and related components, while other markets may specify JIS G3444, GB/T 3091, ASTM A53, or ASTM A500 depending on the system and local regulations.
