Steel Coils And Plates

Steel coil is a continuous strip of rolled steel wound into a compact roll, while steel plate is supplied as individual flat sheets cut to specified dimensions. Coils suit continuous processing, whereas steel plate suppliers provide plates for structural, pressure vessel and heavy fabrication applications.

Steel coils are processed into roofing, wall panels, pipes, automotive parts, appliances, furniture and industrial components. Steel coil manufacturers can supply hot-rolled, cold-rolled, galvanized or prepainted coils according to the intended application.

Coiling makes long steel strips easier to store, transport and feed into continuous production lines. After uncoiling, the steel may retain some curvature called coil set, so manufacturers often use leveling equipment before cutting or forming it.

CRC means cold-rolled coil, while HRC means hot-rolled coil. HRC is rolled at high temperatures and generally has a rougher surface, while CRC undergoes further rolling at room temperature for tighter tolerances and a smoother finish.

Sizes vary by coil type and application.
