Stainless Seamless Pipes

Stainless steel pipe can be either seamless or welded. A stainless steel seamless pipe is manufactured without a longitudinal weld seam, making it suitable for applications involving high pressure, temperature or corrosive fluids.

A seamless stainless steel pipe is formed from a solid billet and has no welded seam. Welded pipe is produced by rolling stainless steel plate or strip and welding the edges together. Seamless pipe is often preferred for demanding pressure service, while welded pipe is usually more economical and available in larger sizes.

Stainless seamless pipe is commonly used in chemical processing, oil and gas, power generation, water treatment, food production, pharmaceutical equipment and heat exchangers. Its corrosion resistance makes it suitable for transporting fluids in demanding industrial environments.

Check the pipe marking, material test certificate or purchase documentation first. For reliable verification, use positive material identification testing, such as an XRF analyzer, to detect the molybdenum normally present in 316. A magnet test alone cannot reliably distinguish 304 from 316.

Neither grade is better for every application. Grade 304 is cost-effective for general-purpose and mildly corrosive environments, while 316 offers better resistance to chlorides, seawater and many chemicals because it contains molybdenum. Therefore, 316 is usually preferred for marine, coastal and chemical-processing applications.
